Jazz 625

There can be no better way to ease into the weekend than with BBC4, who delivered an evening of jazz through the Jazz 625 programmes from the 1960’s.

The title of the show referred to the fact that BBC2 was broadcast on the 625-line UHF system rather than the 405-line VHF system then used by BBC1 and ITV. Jazz 625 set a gold standard in the televisual representation of jazz. It combined a well-informed presenter, a superb sound balance and an uncluttered approach to camera work and direction.

Many shows of its era are no longer in the BBC archives, as they were either junked after transmission or, if broadcast live, not recorded at all. Happily, this is not the case with Jazz 625. With video tape recording still in its infancy, machines were in heavy demand. So, many programmes, particularly in the drama field, were ‘telerecorded’ onto 35mm film, from a feed of the studio output. This method made editing a lot easier, and has aided the survival of programmes recorded in this way.

Adidas Originals x Star Wars

The hype has been around for a while. There have been teasers, there have been clips. Some were created in collaboration with local artists and creative collectives. But now the official promo ident for the collaboration between Adidas Originals and Star Wars is out.

Celebrate this powerful alliance to the beat of a stunning new and improved remix of the Imperial March and cameos from Snoop Dogg, David Beckham, Calle 13, DJ Neil Armstrong and Daft Punk, representing their originality.

Carnival goers are suited up in Adidas Originals x Star Wars outfits, doing the usual carnival activities - playing baseball with a light sabre, watching X-Wings and Tie Fighters laser tag each other in the sky…and so forth. Watch out for a pensive David Beckham looking seriously at the sky, and Snoop Dogg bringing the party to the rooftop.

Designer Bikes

My favourite publication reports on one of my favourite passions - bicycles.

As the concept of urban mobility gains momentum, bike manufacturers are harnessing the world’s best industrial designers to re-invent locomotion on two wheels. Monocle’s Sarah Balmond reports on design innovation in Copenhagen and Hong Kong.
